The Union Canal Tunnel Park includes 109 acres of meadows and woods surrounding the oldest transportation tunnel in the U.S. and 5/8 mile of watered canal. The Tunnel, a National Historic Landmark, was completed in 1827. Visitors can walk on the towpath once trodden by mules, picnic at the mouth of the tunnel or climb the marked trails through the wooded hill adjacent to the canal.
The park is open year round from dawn to dusk. Boat rides on the canal and through the tunnel are available the second and fourth Sundays during the months of June through October, from 12:30 to 4:30 PM. On nights when the moon is full there are rides from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. Groups can make reservations for boat rides by calling the Union Canal. Rides on the canal and through the tunnel cost $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for students from 6-14 years of age and younger children are free. There is a discount for school groups. The park is also available for class reunions, weddings and family gatherings. For reservations or information call 717- 272-6949 or 717-273-4115.
